Our Story

My family’s cake-making story began in 1949, when my grandfather started Hoepner’s Bakery after returning home from the war. He eventually moved the business to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he grew it into multiple locations and raised his family with my grandmother working by his side.

My dad grew up in that shop, living upstairs—Hoepner’s Bakery was truly a way of life. When my parents were dating as teenagers, my mom even worked there as a salesclerk.

I have vivid memories of my childhood in the bakery—I can still smell my dad after a long day’s work and taste the warm, custard-filled, chocolate-covered Long John donut my grandmother would set aside for me. As a little girl, I’d sometimes get the special treat of going in with my dad at 3 a.m. He’d pretend I was his big helper, and I was proud to take on the role—but inevitably, I’d end up curled up in a sleeping bag (which he always knew to bring!) laying on a 100-pound sack of flour. When I was old enough to actually be of help, I remember those long holiday shifts—working 12 hours straight and sometimes falling asleep on my feet.

Running a full baking operation is back-breaking labor—I watched my grandparents and father pour their heart and soul into it throughout my childhood. While I’m not running a full bakery today, I pour the same dedication and love into every cake I create. My family’s labor instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family-run businesses and what it truly takes not only to succeed but to craft a product you’re proud of. And even now, when I’m experimenting with a new flavor or technique, I still call my dad for advice—his guidance is always just a phone call away.

After a 20+ year career as a television producer, I stepped away from corporate America to follow a passion that’s been in my blood from the start. With every cake I create today, I hope to honor my grandfather’s legacy—I like to think he’s proud.
